NATURE AND PURPOSES OF ORGANIZATION GOALS

Every organizations has goals,goals are desired ends of organizational activity ,they are broad statements ,which an organization aims to achieve in future ,hence ,goals refer to the future destinations of an organizations ,the goals are variously referred to as "purpose "'"mission"'"target" ' or "objective".

The formulations of organizational goals is the ist stage of the overall planning process,places, strategies ,and policies cannot be formulated unless the goals have been clearly identified and defined ,simply ,organizational goal may be defined as a decided statement what the organizations wants to achieve in the future.
Defines organizational goals as"a desired state of affairs that organizations attempt to realize".

Goals tell management where the organization should be going,they guide actions of organizations ,hence ,goals determine the activities that should be undertaken for attaining them, without a goal no. organization would have reason to exits.

Organization accumulates and utilizes physical ,financial ,and human resources to meet their goals ,goals are yardsticks,or benchmark agiansts which the success of an organization is measured ,hence they are use full for measuring ,comparing,and evaluating results. goals provide the basis and directions for the performance of all other managerial functions.

from the above discussion,the nature of organizational goals is as follows:

*RELATED TO FUTURE:
Goals are always related to future, they are statements ,which an organization aims to achieve in the future ,goals provides a clear vision of future ,hence,goals refer to the future destinations of an organization.
*MULTIPLE IN NUMBERS:
Goals are need in all areas of organization ,this implies that every organization has a packages of goals set in various key ares.there are eight key ares in which objectives have to be set-market standing ,innovation,innovation,productivity,physical and financial resources ,profitability ,manager performances ,worker performances and attitude and socail responsibility.
*TYPES OF GOAL:
Organizational goals exist at each organizational level, hence, and organization needs to establish a great many goals they vary by organizational level. their has identified 4 levels, of goals. according that organization needs to define mission,strategic,tactical, and operational goals,but after divided organizational goals into official ,operative and oeprational goals.once the goals are
formed,it becomes aguiding image for the organization.

*GOALS HAVE HIERARCHY:
Goals are hierarchical from corporate mission to specific individual goals,the goals ,which are based on mission or purpose of the organization,from a hierarchy from top to the lowest position in the organization structures,the organization is divided into departments,the goals set at top level form the basis of departmental goals and in turn the departmenal goals form the basis of lower level ,and so on. the goals at various levls of organization form an "end-means' chain.

*GOALS ARE CONFLICTING:
Organizations have many goals which tend to be different ,these goals are not only complementary but also conflicting with one another,for ex. manufacturing firm could have such goals as to -produce a stylish product-produce high quality product and keep the production cost to minimum ,the ist two goals to produce a stylish product with high quality conflict with the goal to keep manufacturing costs as low as possible.

*CRITERIA FOR EFFECTIVE GOALS:
The characteristics of effective goals are the same ,whether it is strategic,tactical or operation,ist goals must cover key dimensions ,secondly ,they should be specific ,measurable,challenging but realistic, rewards linked and time linked.
